ABOUT DR. FARIA KAMAL

The decision to access therapy is a deeply personal journey, and finding someone who truly "gets you" can make all the difference. I care about people feeling understood, supported, and equipped to tackle whatever life throws your way. At the heart of my work is deep compassion and a genuine belief that each of us is capable of powerful, enduring change.

Education & Training

My Approach

My style is warm, straightforward, and practical. Together, we’ll figure out what actually works for you. I’ll help you understand your mind and patterns — your thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses — more clearly, learn new skills, and experiment with different ways of thinking and responding to challenges that show up in your life. I use science and research — referred to as evidence-based therapies — to tailor each session to your strengths, goals, and areas of difficulty. My approach blends the science of what works with the complexities of the challenges you face.

In a world where healthcare often pushes “more” — more medication, more appointments, more time — I believe the most effective therapy gives you more agency, not more dependence. My philosophy is simple: Therapy should expand your capacity, resilience, and confidence, not keep you stuck. I often tell clients that my goal is to work myself out of a job — because when you have the tools you need, you won’t need me anymore.

Background

I’ve been doing this work for over 18 years, providing therapy for trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, anger, impulsive behaviors, substance use, emotional dysregulation, complicated relationship dynamics, and major life transitions. I also have specialized experience working with individuals who struggle with self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). My clinical foundations are in behavioral therapy, which means I focus on practical skills, concrete goals, accountability, and meaningful, real-world change.

I love this work deeply. So much so that I also teach and train other mental health and medical professionals on how to provide effective, evidence-based therapy. At Columbia University Medical Center, I was the Team Leader for DBT Services within the Columbia Day Program, where I created and built adherent DBT group treatment programming and trained various mental health professionals on DBT. I am also a certified global DBT trainer for Behavioral Tech, the leading training/consulting organization created by the founder of DBT, Marsha Linehan.

I’m incredibly passionate about ensuring DBT is practiced in a culturally-sensitive and inclusive manner so that everyone can benefit, no matter their background. To support this, I created the first gold-standard foundational training specifically designed to teach professionals how to provide DBT services to diverse communities (e.g. people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ individuals, or anyone with unique identity factors) and adapt interventions to address each individual’s cultural and identity needs in therapy. To date, 2500+ psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and mental health providers have been trained within this model to deliver culturally-responsive treatment.

I am also a founding member and helped build the Anti-Racism Committee of ISITDBT, an organization dedicated to increasing knowledge in the field and hosting the global conference for DBT practitioners.

As a committed advocate for better mental health services, I am involved in initiatives focused on reducing stigma and increasing access to treatment for underserved communities at both the state and national level. As a researcher and mental health specialist, I’ve had the opportunity to share my work and insight to support various institutions, including Yale, Harvard, UCLA, Google, NBC, Pinterest, as well as school boards, psychological associations, and policy makers both across the country and internationally.
